Functional programming has been around for a long time, but in recent years almost all mainstream languages have eagerly embraced it. Developers are no longer thinking it it is a good idea, but are building systems with the constructs of functional programming. In reality, we are building systems with hybrid models, imperative, object-oriented, and functional paradigms. In this presentation we will take a quick look at the main benefits and capabilities of functional programming, some of the requirements, and how we can design systems in a way we can practically honor those requirements in order to reap the benefits of the paradigm. We will draw inspirations from practical applications and libraries that illustrate how to design and architect using the functional approach.
